HOME & HOSPICE CARE

Home Care

Tweed Palliative Support Inc. provides award-winning palliative support services in the Tweed Shire.

The urgent need for home-based palliative care services was identified at a public meeting in 1998. Tweed Palliative Support Inc. was then established and trained volunteer palliative support carers have provided at-home palliative support ever since. Our palliative support services include:

Hospice Care

Wedgetail Retreat is a purpose-built Hospice facility with four self-contained private rooms, spacious communal areas and a wrap-around balcony overlooking the rainforest at Dulguigan, just outside of Murwillumbah in Far North NSW.

Since 2015 Wedgetail Retreat has offered a tranquil alternative to busy hospitals for respite and  end-of-life care for people with a life-limiting illness. Our Registered Nurses are present 24 hours every day of the week along with trained volunteers who round out the team that  provides you with exceptional care supporting you and your loved ones during this delicate time.

Our Wedgetail Retreat service details are as follows:

  • To access our service, people can  be referred by a doctor or other health professional. Prospective guests are assessed to ensure the service is suited to their needs.

  • Our facility complements the palliative care resources provided by local area health services and community health teams. Your doctor is encouraged to visit but if they are unable, we have a Palliative Care Doctor available.

  • We provide home-cooked meals and you are surrounded by extensive gardens and wrap-around timber verandah with rainforest views to inspire and uplift the spirits.

  • We are not funded by the government and rely fully on the donations from the community and occasional one off grants.   Those who can, may donate to support their daily nursing care or contribute in other ways.

  • We welcome family, friends and even your pet to this inclusive uplifting environment. Family members are also welcome to stay, each room contains an additional single bed.

  • Our Registered Nurses and trained volunteers are there to support you and your family with compassionate guidance tailored to your needs, just ask.

  • The Hospice is the only adults’ community hospice in NSW

Northern Rivers Palliative Care and Hospice Service Offerings Comparison

It has been my privilege to have worked at Wedgetail Retreat since it first opened in 2015. During the decade that has passed, I have been witness to tragedy, uplifting acts of kindness, the healing of long-standing family rifts as well as the deepest love the human spirit can express. Having been a nurse for forty-five years, being part of a team such as we have at the hospice and in the wider community must +9rank as the most rewarding time of my professional career. As nurses, we work alongside unpaid volunteers who come from diverse backgrounds, each having an individual strength which is encouraged and called upon to enhance the holistic care we offer at the hospice. As we have a capacity of only four guests at the Retreat, we have the time to attend to the specialised nursing required in palliative care, and also to include family and friends in the bigger picture. Included in this is a supportive network of doctors, social workers and community nurses, and the people from our local towns have been right behind us as our journey continues. Palliative care is a developing field, and we are open to new ideas as our work continues. Caring beyond a cure.
